Fun and Safe Toys for the Holidays
The holidays are just around the corner and that means erector sets for some, and Barbie dolls for others. Well intentioned relatives enjoy treating the young children with the coolest toys for the holiday season.
It is important that family members explain to others some restrictions about eye safety and choosing toys. Injuries involving toys may occur, occasionally resulting in blindness.
What are some tips to protect kids from toy related injury?
- Only buy gifts which are developmentally suitable. Don't allow younger children to play with toys and games made for older children.
- Look for a toy that is made of strong, durable material and look for any sharp edges. Make sure long-handled toys such as swords or brooms are rounded on the end.
- Watch small kids when they play.
- Promote eye safety awareness by discarding toys with sharp or jagged pieces or firing projectiles or BB guns.
Before you purchase the new toy or game that your kids have been pleading with you for, spend a minute to read toy safety guidelines. Anyone who has ever watched ''A Christmas Story'' should have learned that already. Avoid a trip to the ER this year and have a joyous holiday.
