10 Ways to Guard Your Eyes This Summer
It's officially summer and it's time to make sure you keep your eyes protected from summertime hazards.
Here are some tips to remain safe in the sun:
- Make sure you have sunglasses with 100% UV Protection - and wear them!
Buy glasses that block 100% of UV rays. Don't worry, sufficient UV blockage doesn't mean a higher price - many more affordable brands provide complete UV blockage.
- Sport larger shades.
In the realm of sunglasses, the larger the better. Make sure to select shades with wraparound frames and wide lenses.
- Wear a wide brimmed hat or visor. A wide brimmed hat will provide an extra layer of defense against the sun's rays.
- Sport sunglasses on overcast days. Even on cloudy days, UV can still reach your eyes and do harm. Don't be fooled by a cloudy day.
- Keep a second pair of sunglasses. You never know when a mishap can happen causing your glasses to break or get lost. Better to be safe than sorry.
- Stay hydrated. It's important to keep your eyes hydrated. Consume a minimum of 8 cups of water a day to prevent dehydrated eyes and skin.
- Avoid the afternoon sun.
Stay indoors as much as possible particularly in the late morning and afternoon when the strength of the sun and ultraviolet radiation in the atmosphere are at a peak.
- Consider purchasing polarized lenses. Polarized lenses minimize the glare from reflective surfaces such as water. Perfect for water sports, beaching or driving, they provide more comfortable vision during outdoor activities.
- Use goggles when swimming to protect your eyes from water-borne bacteria or swimming pool chemicals. Because the sun's rays reflect off water you can increase exposure to UV so get goggles that block UV as well.
- Apply sunscreen carefully. If applied near the eyes it can enter the eye and cause discomfort.
