Know the Danger that UV can cause Your Eyes
Most Americans are aware of the dangers of Ultraviolet (UV) rays to
your skin, (including sunburn and skin cancer) and the necessity of
applying sunscreen and using other protective measures during outdoor
activities. But did you know that UV and other radiation from the sun
are also a danger to your eyes?
If you are thinking of going outside without proper eye protection,
consider this: Continual absorption of the sun's UV rays has been
linked to eye damage.
UV Risks to Eyesight
Intense UV exposure over a short amount of time can result in
photokeratitis or a ''sunburn on the eye'', leading to pain, blurry
vision or even temporary vision loss. Long-term UV exposure can result
in more serious eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration,
and others, all of which can be a threat to vision. Individuals that
come into frequent contact with welding machines, tanning beds and
lasers are also at increased risk of exposure to UV radiation.
Selecting UV Protective Sunglasses
For effective UV protection, you should select sunglasses that
completely block all UV rays. Stick with shades that specify they are
''UV 400'', which indicates that they block all light rays with
wavelengths up to 400 nanometers (which includes both UVA and UVB rays,
both known to enter the atmosphere).
The size of your sunglasses is also important. Sunglasses with side
protection can prevent dangerous ultraviolet rays from coming in through
the sides and back of the frame.
Those whose regular activity involves extensive exposure to sunlight
are at the most risk for damage to their eyes. UV can be bounced off of
bright areas such as snow, water, and white sand and poses the greatest
risk from 10 am to 3 pm and during the summer months. Exposure to UV
becomes more substantial as you get closer to the equator and at high
altitudes. It's recommended that you consult with an eye care
professional and to know the hazards of UV exposure. The simple act of
putting on your sunglasses can be the key to preserving your precious
eyesight.
